Make Your Storage Unit Your New Years Resolution

Welcome to 2016!!! We’ve seen many people coming and going to their self-storage units at SaskWatch Storage in Moose Jaw. One thing that crossed our minds is “how efficient do folks make their units?”  Your self-storage units don’t have to be a space you visit once

Businessman closing door of storage unit office

or twice a year to dig something out of a stack of boxes. They can be highly organized, easily accessible spaces that free up necessary space in your home or office.  Here’s a few hints on how to get the most out of your storage space:

Unpack and Arrange Items Efficiently
Before you load up the truck to take your packed items to your self-storage unit, check with our manager to make sure there is adequate space for the truck to maneuver to your unit.

As you arrive at the facility and begin to unload, arranging your furniture, equipment, boxes, and other odds-and-ends efficiently in your storage unit will make a big difference in maximizing its convenience.

Here are a few tried-and-true suggestions for putting items into your unit:
Plan ahead
•    While your storage unit should already be clean and swept out, consider putting down protective canvas sheeting, cardboard or wooden boards on the floor for cleanliness.
•    Keep a fold-up step stool in your space for accessing hard-to-reach areas.
•    Frequently-used items should be placed near the entrance for easy access. This holds true for file boxes and other business items, too. Continue reading

3 Simple Steps to Make Your Packing Up Simpler

At SaskWatch Storage we want you to get the most out of your self storage experience in Moose Jaw.  To get the most out of them, it is best to plan ahead before you start loading up the truck. Here are 3 simple steps to help you plan ahead:

CavemanFridgeStep 1: Plan What You Will Store
1.    Start by identifying items that will be packed in boxes and stacked.
2.    Prioritize boxed items you will want to access most frequently (they’ll go closer to the front of the unit).
3.    Group by fragility or weight – heavier, sturdier items should be stored on the bottom of stacked items, fragile items on top.
4.    Consider awkwardly-sized items that won’t stack well, including how often you will need to use them, and how heavy they are.

Step 2: Choose the Right Size Unit
Nobody wants to pay for storage they don’t need. But a little extra space makes moving around within the unit much easier. It also gives you room to add those unplanned items that always seem to pop up. Feel free to give our Manager a call and/ or meet on-site to see what size unit is going to best fit your needs. There’s No Place Like Home…Spring Clearing Tips

Moose Jaw Mini StorageAt SaskWatch Storage we really love how Dorothy and Toto have taken to self storage in Moose Jaw 🙂

Now that warmer spring weather is just around the corner, we thought it would be a good idea to share a few more Storage Tips as you do a little Spring Cleaning around the house and make the most out of your mini storage unit.

Boxes:
Free stuff is always great! There’s no better place to get your boxes than to ask around the local business community. Often you can get sturdy boxes for free from places such as the liquor store, simply by asking.

Remember, pick out uniform-sized boxes to help with the stacking and keep things stable…especially if you do not have any shelves to put things onto.

Do your best to maximize the capacity of each box. Do not overfill or under fill them, as this will affect your stability and stacking process.

Plastic Bins:
This is a trend that we have certainly seen with our customers. More and more people are using plastic bins that are pre-formed for stacking.

Clear ones offer a convenient look inside at the contents. If you are using regular plastic bins, be sure to clearly label the ends (both of them) so that it is easy to re-locate your stuff.

organized-storage-roomLastly, be careful not to overpack them with heavy items like books as this is difficult to more around. If you have the time, make a list of key items in each box and label it. Keep this list at home and printed out. It’s really handy if you ever have to send someone else in to pick something up for you.

These are great for storage units without climate control as they help prevent moisture and dust from getting into your stuff.

When packing fragile items into your boxes or bins, don’t be afraid to grad some dish towels or clothing to wrap them up. This will help protect things from getting damaged or broken during the move in/ out phase.

Finally, as this is a “Spring Clean Up” blog post, don’t be afraid to get rid of the things you don’t need anymore. Donate to local charity, family or friends, hold a garage sale, or simply chuck it. Give yourself a break and stop packing around the things that you don’t need anymore 🙂

All the best and have a wonderful March!

Moose Jaw Self Storage Spring Cleaning Tip

At SaskWatch Storage in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, we believe that spring cleaning of your mini-storage unit is a great way to get a fresh start to the long relaxing summer days. Fingers and toes crossed that the snow has finally finished blessing us…phew, what a storm on the last day of April eh?? 🙂

Here are a couple of self storage tips for you to make room for the year to come.

Moose-Jaw-self-storage-spring-cleanOf course, organizing storage units can be an intimidating task. If you are like most people, you use storage facilities as a last-ditch effort, a place to put items that no longer fit in your home or in your life. This makes these materials particularly daunting to tackle. We recommend that you bring a team of people with you to clean your storage facility, and to come with two main items: plenty of boxes and a heavy-duty black pen.

How SaskWatch Storage in Moose Jaw Can Help You Celebrate St. Patricks Day

Firstly, no, you cannot throw a St. Patty’s Day party in your SaskWatch Storage self-storage unit at, as tempting as it may be, even if all your storage unit has in it are a few extra tables and couches, which, let’s face it, would be great for a party.

saint-patrickFirst, let’s start with a little bit of history, because we know there was an Irish Saint named Patrick and that the traditional color of Ireland is green (I personally think they stole the idea from our Saskatchewan Roughriders…just sayin’), but how did a traditionally religious day become an internationally recognized and celebrated holiday? Well, it all started, of course with Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized patron saint of Ireland, who was born in fourth century Roman Britain. He travelled to Ireland as a bishop to spread Christianity to the Irish, who were polytheistic/pagan. It is said that he used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish people. He died in the fifth century on March 17. The day eventually became an official religious feast day in Ireland and soon spread around the world to its present form as a celebration of Irish culture.
